Since 2008, we have fostered critical discussion of film and media in Toronto and its proximate region.

Who We Are:

The inaugural meeting of the then Toronto Film Seminar was held on March 27, 2008; in 2014, it was renamed the Toronto Film and Media Seminar to reflect the full disciplinary range of the growing field. Modelled on forums in New York (Columbia Film Seminar) and Chicago (Chicago Film Seminar), the TFMS provides an arena for the scholarly discussion of film and media among members of primarily academic communities of Toronto and Southern Ontario.

Our larger community is made up of faculty, postdocs, independent scholars, and graduate students, most connected to a diverse range of research and public institutions in the province—including Brock University, Queen’s University, OCAD University, Toronto Metropolitan University, Sheridan College, TIFF, University of Guelph, University of Toronto, Wilfrid Laurier University, and York University —strengthening ties between colleagues at these institutions and encouraging collegiality.

TIFF Bell Lightbox, the year-round home of the Toronto International Film Festival and the gracious co-host of TFMS, is located on the Treaty Lands and Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit and the traditional territory of the the Anishinaabe, the Wendat, and the Haudenosaunee. The territory is within the lands protected by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant and is home to many First Nations, Inuit , and Métis people. We are grateful to work on this land and in collaboration with our colleagues at TIFF.

We thank all our members who volunteered to create and maintain this website.
